Queen Victoria of England is known to be a dog-lover, back in this Victorian era – Golden Retriever is one of the breed that was created. Several breeds were believed to be associated with the development of the Golden Retriever such as the Tweed Water Spaniel, wavy and flag-coated retrievers and lastly, a red setter. The person who got all the credit in the production of the very first dogs that were later named and known as Golden Retrievers is Dudley Marjoirbanks, Lord Tweedmouth. But contrary to that popular belief, the latest research into studbooks, aged paintings and other sources strongly propose that dogs which is closely similar to the Golden Retriever is probably a setter type that is already existing long before the Lord Tweedmouth even started to breed them in his Scottish estate or the Guisachan. In 1911, the England’s Kennel Club categorized the dogs as “Retrievers – Yellow of Golden” but 9 years later they decided to change its name to “Retriever – Golden.”

This particular breed is already registered in the American Kennel Club as early as 1925 but it is only formally acknowledged as a breed 7 years after the first registration which in 1932. From then on, Golden Retriever was rapidly known to be a very versatile dog – it can be a companion dog, working dogs or hunting dogs. Not only that, this specific breed is also a part in search and rescue team, animal-assisted therapy, detection of arson and assists the people with disability to their work. With the dog’s innate power, agility, keenness and intelligence, it is very easy for them to learn, adapt and perform almost any chore that it is being commanded to do so.

At the present, Golden Retrievers is one of the most adored and loved breeds. As a proof, it was able to sit on the 5th rank amongst the other breeds acknowledged by the American Kennel Club.

One of the most famous and memorable appearance of the Golden Retriever breed is in the film Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993). In this Hollywood production we get to know 3 children, who goes on a trip to San Francisco after they parents’ wedding, leaving their pets – Chance, the American Bulldog, Shadow, an older Golden Retriever and Sessy, a Himalayan cat at their friend’s farm for the week. Sadly, the animals think that they were abandoned, therefore Shadow decides to set out and find his little master, Peter, the oldest son in the family. The aristocratic cat and the reluctant dog follow him and they head into the dangerous and unknown wilderness. After lots of adventures finally they all manage to reuinte with their anxious owners.

In real life, the Golden Retriever is very much similar to the dog in this film, the breed is friendly, eager to plase, intelligent and is fond of other animals and children as well, so they are great family pets.

Golden Retievers were developed in the 1800’s by a British aristocrat, Lord Tweedmouth. The goal was to create a hunting dog, which doesn’t only work well, but looks beautiful too. For the crossing they used Tweed Water Spaniel, Newfoundland, Irish Setters and different kinds of water Spaniels. The result speaks for itself: a highly intelligent, wonderful companion was born, which became one of the most popular dogs all over the world.

The first Golden Retriever Club was formed in 1908 and they were brought to America in the 1920’s and the first one was registered in AKC in 1925.
